KC-135 Stratotanker at NC Global TransPark
Yesterday’s special guest at the North Carolina Global TransPark (NCGTP) was a KC-135 Stratotanker operated by Metrea Strategic Mobility to support East Coast training operations with Cherry Point. The aircraft stopped to refuel and prepare for its next mission.
The KC-135 Stratotanker provides a core aerial refueling capability. Four turbofans mounted under 35-degree swept wings power the KC-135 for takeoffs at gross weights of 322,500 pounds. The KC-135 can carry up to 200,000 pounds of fuel, which is pumped through a flying boom at the tail to refuel a receiver aircraft during flight.
This refueling event shows the vital resource that the NCGTP’s 11,500 ft runway and fuel facility are. Without access to a runway of this length, the KC-135 Stratotanker could have only carried half its capacity, as with shorter runways.
Furthermore, this is a prime example of the growing need for greater fuel access at the NCGTP. That’s where the new 500,000-gallon capacity fuel farm will be a vital asset to the Kinston Regional Jetport, the NCGTP, and its aerospace, aviation, and defense contractor tenants.
As one of the EDR’s regional partners, the North Carolina Global TransPark – Kinston Regional Jetport (ISO) in Kinston, NC, is a unique aerospace asset in eastern North Carolina. This 2,500-acre multimodal industrial park with its 11,500-ft runway access is located in the heart of Eastern NC.
